Material-wise, we can do pretty much anything in the sign world. For outdoor durability, use 304 stainless steel. It has 18% chromium and 8% nickel, so it lasts 10+ years outdoors. For your acrylic faces, here's the hard truth: Mitsubishi or Degussa acrylic gives you 90-92% light transmittance and won't yellow for 5-8 years. Domestic acrylic? You'll see yellowing in 1-2 years. We stock both. I'll always recommend the good stuff, but if you're doing a temporary sign for a pop-up store, save your money.
LED modules? We use SMD 2835 — that's the industry standard at 100-150 lumens per watt. L70 rating of 50,000 hours. Cheap modules from a no-name brand might last 12-18 months. That's an industry lie that's killed more signs than hurricanes. Quality modules from Samsung or Osram will give you 5+ years of real life. For back-lit halo letters, we use SMD 5730 for maximum brightness — 40-60 lumens per chip.
Here's where most factories get your trust and then blow it. I'm going to be straight with you.
We can't get you a UL listed sign in 2 weeks. UL testing takes 4-9 months and costs $4,000-15,000. We do have CE, RoHS, and ISO 9001. Those are real. But if your local building inspector requires UL 48 or ETL, that's a separate process. We can build the sign to NEC Article 600 specifications, but you'll need to coordinate the listing with a third-party agency. Some factories claim they have UL and they don't. Ask to see the certificate with today's date.
We can't ship sea freight in 15 days. Sea takes 50-70 days. That's the reality. If you need it fast, express shipping is 7-15 days but it'll cost you $30-100 for small packages. Air freight is 10-20 days at $4-12 per kilogram. For a couple of letters, air might make sense. For a full storefront, sea freight at $80-200 per cubic meter will save you money, but you need to plan ahead.
We can't make a sign that survives a hurricane just because you ask for 'IP65'. IP65 means dust-tight and protected against water jets. It does NOT mean your sign is waterproof in a monsoon. For coastal areas, spec IP66 or even IP68 if it's submersible. And if you're using 304 stainless in a saltwater environment, you're already losing. You need 316.
We also can't read your mind. If you send us a low-res photo of a font you like, we'll do our best, but we need a vector file. We can help you create one, but that's a service. And don't ask for 'custom gold-plated letters' unless you're ready to pay for brass or copper. We make brass letters, but they're not cheap.
The ugly truth is that many buyers walk into a factory-direct deal without understanding the hidden costs. US Section 301 tariffs add about 30% to your import. You'll pay that. We don't control that. We can label things correctly to help you declare accurately, but tax evasion is a bad look for a sign shop.
Color temperature is something you feel but don't see on a spec sheet. 3000-3500K warm light is for hospitality — makes a restaurant look cozy. 4000-5000K neutral is for corporate and retail — crisp, clean. 6000-6500K cool white is for industrial and highway signage — that's where you want the maximum punch. We'll ask you where the sign is going before we pick the LEDs.
If you're doing a sign for a public building, don't forget ADA. Mount sign at 48-60 inches to center, use non-glare finish, Grade 2 Braille. We can do all that, but you have to tell us it's an ADA job. We're not mind readers.
Here's what I've seen go wrong: a shop orders a batch of channel letters, doesn't specify the LED module brand, and gets the cheap ones with 12-18 month life. Then they blame the factory. We don't do that. Our standard modules are SMD 2835 from a top-tier supplier. If you want Samsung, we'll quote you Samsung. If you want the cheap stuff, we'll tell you to expect a callback from an angry customer in a year.
For a lighter, rust-proof option, go with aluminum letters. They're about one-third the weight of steel and still last 8-12 years outdoors. But they're not as rigid, so we'll recommend minimum thickness of 1.0mm for letters under 2 meters. Don't try to save money with 0.6mm — they'll bend in the wind.
