
Use RGB for sign printing. Our standard 5mm acrylic faces let 90–92% of light through, and a modern RIP can do more with that light from an RGB file than a CMYK file that got flattened in Photoshop. If you're still designing in CMYK because some old-timer told you to back in 2005, stop it. Just don't.
Color mode decides whether the red on your screen ends up red on the vinyl. Or whether it comes out orange and you eat a full reprint because the customer hates it.
Take acrylic LED letters, for instance. Use UV-resistant acrylic from Mitsubishi or Degussa, and you'll get 5–8 years before yellowing. Use cheap domestic sheet, and you're looking at 1–2 years. Color mode won't save you if the face itself shifts.
I've seen this exact failure: an installer called because a white logo turned cream after two winters. The file was CMYK, the face was bargain acrylic, and the shop blamed the printer. The printer was fine. Don't ask me how many times I've had that call.
RGB is light. Your monitor pushes red, green, and blue to make white. CMYK is ink. The printer stacks cyan, magenta, yellow, and black on a substrate to absorb light. One adds light, the other takes it away.
Here's the part nobody tells you: the printer doesn't care what color mode your file claims. It cares what data the RIP can actually read. A wide-format inkjet running 8 or 10 colors can hit more of the RGB gamut than any CMYK export you'll squeeze out of Illustrator.
That's why the old 'always design in CMYK for print' advice is wrong. Full stop. Times changed.
Convert RGB to CMYK in Photoshop, and the program smashes any out-of-gamut color into the nearest printable value. Bright neon orange goes brown. Electric blue goes purple. Your brand color dies.
Here's a number I actually care about: a 3mm acrylic face passes 92% of light. A 2mm face passes 90%. Your customer won't notice that 2% difference, but they'll sure notice the 40% cost bump if you spec thicker material without understanding why.
Same logic applies to color. A forced CMYK conversion doesn't just dull a color—it drags the whole image toward mud. Then you blame the printer, when the real problem was clicking that export button.
Here's the simple rule: if it's going on a sheet-fed press—business cards, brochures, letterhead—use CMYK. If it's going on vinyl, banner, acrylic, aluminum, or any wide-format inkjet, keep RGB.
Ordering front-lit channel letters for a storefront? The face gets lit from behind, and light diffuses through it. Your printer needs the widest color data possible to keep your blue from turning teal at the edges.
I've watched shops design in CMYK and then feed the file to a 10-color printer. They leave a serious chunk of that printer's color range on the table because someone told them 'CMYK is for print.'
Ugly truth? A lot of designers still pre-convert to CMYK because some old sign guy told them to back in 2005. Modern RIP software—Onyx, Caldera, Ergosoft—handles RGB natively and does the separation itself, using the output profile. Stubbornness isn't a color profile.
Embed an sRGB or Adobe RGB profile in your PDF and send that. Don't export to US Web Coated SWOP v2 and expect a latex printer to love it. That profile was built for coated paper, not acrylic, vinyl, or perforated metal.
If a shop asks for CMYK, ask them why. If they can't answer beyond 'that's how we've always done it,' find a shop that actually understands RIP workflows.
Here's what nobody tells you: your client's brand hex code isn't a color. It's a reference point. The same hex looks different on a monitor, on vinyl, on powder-coated steel, and on backlit acrylic. If you don't test, you're guessing.
For backlit halo letters, the LED color temperature changes everything. A 3000–3500K warm white behind a cool blue acrylic gives you a different color than a 6000–6500K cool white. You can't fix that in Photoshop.
Rookie mistake: sending a tiny RGB logo and expecting it to scale to a 6-foot sign. It might look fine on screen, then pixelate in the RIP. Get vector art.
And for the love of everything, don't use cheap LED modules. Those last 12–18 months, tops. Our Bluesky and Rishang modules run 5+ years. Dead LEDs mean patchy color, and patchy color means a warranty call.

That aging test catches color drift before it ships. We see panels that look perfect at hour 2 and show a yellow cast by hour 10. The test kills those.
Quote 304 stainless steel letters, and the finish becomes part of the color. Brushed #4, mirror #8, PVD, powder coat—each reflects light differently and shifts the perceived hue. You can't match a finish to a Pantone without a physical sample.
MOQ is one piece. A sample takes about 5 days; bulk production runs about 15 days depending on size and complexity. Warranty: 2 years on LEDs, 1 year on the power supply. That's how a factory controls color—through process, not Photoshop.
Sending CMYK—can you still print it? Sure. We'll rip it. But if the color comes out dead, don't come back with 'my file looked perfect on my monitor.' I can't fix a crushed gamut in production.
What's the best file format for sign color? PDF/X-4 with an embedded RGB profile. Vector art preferred. JPGs are for proofing, not production.
Why did my backlit sign print darker than the proof? Your proof sat on paper, and your sign is acrylic with an LED behind it. Light diffuses, color shifts, and paper proofs don't show that.
Do I need Pantone colors for signs? Pantone helps for paint and powder coat, but LED and backlit acrylic need a physical sample. I've seen Pantone 300C look completely different in a backlit halo letter.
