Here's what nobody tells you: IP ratings are lab tests, not weather forecasts. An IP65 sign is not "dunkable." It's not "hurricane-proof." It's a controlled nozzle spray during a 30-second test in some factory hall. And if the sign was sealed wrong—or the power supply box is left open to the elements—the rating on the sticker doesn't mean squat.
I've spent 16 years on a sign factory floor. I've built channel letters for strip malls in Phoenix and halo-lit logos for Miami condos. This is the guide I wish my clients would read before they call me demanding IP67 "just to be safe."
## What the Numbers Actually Mean
The first digit in an IP rating is solids. IP6-anything means dust-tight. Nobody argues about that.
The second digit is water. That's where the confusion starts.
5 means protected against low-pressure water jets from any direction. That's rain. That's condensation. That's a mild rinsing from a garden hose. Most storefront signs don't need more than this.
6 means powerful water jets. We're talking a proper pressure washer, the kind we use to knock dried silicone off concrete. Or wind-driven rain on a coastal building. Or water bouncing off the pavement two feet below a sign during a monsoon.
7 means temporary immersion. Up to 1 meter deep for 30 minutes. That's not rain. That's flooding. That's a sign sitting in a puddle like a drowned rat.
Here's the kicker: IP67 does not automatically include IP66. The immersion test and the water jet test are different. A sealed box that survives being dunked can blow a gasket when hit with a high-pressure stream. Don't assume. Ask for the test report.
## IP65: The Everyday Workhorse
Look, if your sign is going on a standard storefront in most of North America or Europe, IP65 is plenty. We build our standard
front-lit channel letters to that spec—silicone-sealed returns, gasketed faces, and weep holes at the bottom so condensation can drain out instead of pooling inside.
The ugly truth is: most IP65 signs on the market are lying. A cheap factory slaps an IP65 sticker on before the silicone cures. We've seen competitors' "waterproof" signs arrive with gaps you could stick a thumbnail in.
We test our signs for 8 to 12 hours with water spray and simulated rain. We use neutral silicone from suppliers we've used for a decade, not the bargain bin stuff. And we still don't call it "waterproof." We call it weatherproof. Because IP65 doesn't protect the raceway on top of the sign, or the junction box on the wall. That part is on your electrician.
If you want a clean, modern look and the sign will sit under an awning or a decent overhang, IP65 is your workhorse. It'll handle a normal storm. It'll handle snow melt dripping on it. It won't handle a car wash nozzle three inches away for ten minutes straight.
## IP66: When the Weather Gets Angry
Now, if your sign is in Miami Beach, or on the side of a building that gets sprayed by lawn sprinklers every night, or mounted at ground level where road salt and rain splash back — you need IP66.
We build those with double-gasketed acrylic faces and sealed cable entry points. For premium architectural jobs, we've done
back-lit halo letters with IP66-rated LED modules and a fully potted wiring harness. That's the good stuff.
The cost difference between IP65 and IP66 on a custom sign? About 15 to 20 percent more in materials and labor. Not because it's "premium." Because it's better gaskets, more corners sealed, thicker adhesive. Anyone trying to charge you double for IP66 is playing you.
I've seen this go wrong: a developer insisted on IP66 for a whole strip mall in Arizona. Cost them an extra $40,000 across 24 signs. Two years later, half the LEDs are still fine. The other half died because the extra gaskets trapped heat. The probability of a monsoon in Phoenix is close to zero. They paid for a problem they never had.
## IP67: The Overkill Club
IP67 means the entire sign is sealed against temporary immersion in water. I'll be blunt: outdoor illuminated signs don't need that. Wall-mounted signs aren't supposed to be underwater. If your sign is at flood level, the building has bigger problems than the sign.
But here's what nobody tells you about IP67 and LED signs: a fully sealed sign has no weep holes. No ventilation. It becomes a thermos for LED heat. And heat is the #1 killer of LEDs. You'll trade water resistance for a 30% shorter LED lifespan. We've watched it happen.
A customer once demanded IP67 on channel letters for a coastal Florida location— not our build, but they came to us later for maintenance. The factory had epoxied every connection, sealed the letters airtight. Summer humidity and internal heat cooked the drivers in 18 months. They got a waterproof sign that didn't work. Real victory.
If you're worried about flooding, mount the sign higher. Move the power supply inside the building. Don't buy IP67 just because you're near the ocean.
## How to Choose — and What We Build
Simple test: where does the sign live, and what hits it?
- **IP65:** Standard storefront, covered walkway, or under a canopy. Rain, snowmelt, morning dew.
- **IP66:** Exposed wall, ground-level signage, coastal areas, places with pressure washing or irrigation.
- **IP67:** Submergible signs. Boat docks. Bridges over rivers. Displays set into the floor. If your sign is going on a wall, skip it.
For your typical retail sign, we'll quote you IP65 on our
dual-lit channel letters — front lit by LED, halo backlight, and fully sealed. That's the workhorse for day/night visibility.
For light boxes, the face is the weak point. A thin flex face will blow out in a storm regardless of the IP rating. Our
acrylic light boxes use 2mm or 3mm UV-stable acrylic bonded to an aluminum frame. That's what keeps the water out, not the sticker on the box. A 3mm face will take a 70 mph wind gust without cracking — at least until a commercial truck throws a rock through it.
## The Ugly Truth About IP Labels
The ugly truth is most IP ratings on imported signs are fake. The letters "IP65" printed on a spec sheet cost nothing. There's no international agency driving around to Chinese factories and testing every channel letter. A factory can label anything it wants.
We don't do that. Our QC process runs every sign through an 8-12 hour aging test with power applied and water sprayed at the seams. We don't certify to a lab standard because our clients don't want to pay $8,000 for a third-party test. But we show you our process. We show you the silicone beads. We give you a two-year LED warranty and a one-year power supply warranty.
If you need a formal IP67 certificate for a government contract, we can source that — through a third-party lab, and you pay for it. That's not us hiding something. That's us being honest about what we can and can't do.
We can't build you a truly submersible IP68 sign with guaranteed operation at depth. We won't fake that. But we can build you an IP66 sign that survives twenty years of rain, salt, and a power washer once a season. The difference is the craft, not the number.
## What We Can't Do (and Won't Pretend To)
We don't do IP68. Period. That's for underwater applications — a sign mounted in a swimming pool floor, or a harbor marker. It requires continuous immersion-rated connectors, fully ported enclosures, and expensive testing. We've done enough marine-grade work to know where our limits are.
We also can't fix a bad installation. I've seen IP66 signs fail because the electrician punched a hole in the side for the conduit and didn't seal it. That's not the sign's fault. That's your contractor's fault. Make sure whoever mounts your sign uses weatherproof conduit fittings and seals every penetration on the box.
The best sign in the world is only as good as the guy who wires it. We tell every customer that. Half of them look at us like we're just making excuses. The other half have seen it happen.
## The Bottom Line
Stop asking for IP67. Ask your factory how they seal the wire entry, what gaskets they use, and whether there's a drain hole. Ask to see a sign that's been through the water test, not just a brochure.
If you want a sign that works in the real world, IP65 handles 90% of the planet. IP66 handles the other 9%. IP67 is for the 1% who have more money than sense.
