Look, I had a hotel chain call me in 2019, frantic. Their five-foot-tall gold lobby letters looked like they'd been keyed up by a sandstorm. Electroplated, top-dollar job. Eighteen months in a covered entrance and the gold went brassy, then green at the edges. That call cost me a weekend and a 3:00am lesson I’ll never forget.
The basic difference between PVD and electroplating
Electroplating is a wet bath of acid salts and electricity. You dunk a stainless letter into a liquid soup and run current through it. Metal ions stick to the surface — gold, chrome, nickel, brass. The layer is thin. Pathetically thin. I’m talking 0.5 to 5 microns. A human hair is 70 microns. Think about that.
PVD is physical vapor deposition. Solid metal or ceramic vaporizes in a vacuum chamber and condenses onto the letter as an ionic, ceramic-hard film. No liquid. No toxic sludge to dispose of later. That film is typically 0.3 to 3 microns but it’s molecularly bonded. It doesn’t just sit on top. Game changer.
Here’s what nobody tells you: that electroplated gold you see on a sample is about as thick as a fingerprint. It scuffs if you breathe on it wrong.
PVD coatings are 10 to 15 times harder — Vickers 2000 HV vs electroplated gold at maybe 200 HV. The same hardness scale where cheap steel is around 150. PVD is sapphire-hard.
I’ve had guys in the shop run a key over both. Electroplated scratches right down to bare steel. Instantly. PVD just gets a faint smudge you can buff off. No harm done. That’s not a lab test. It’s what happens when a client’s kid drags a ring across the lobby sign.
Durability in the real world — not the brochure
The ugly truth: electroplated outdoor letters are an expensive gamble dressed up as a bargain. You see them everywhere — bank facades, restaurant pylons. Gold or chrome, shining the first six months. Then UV and moisture kick in. The electroplated layer is porous. Oxidation creeps under the surface. First micro-blisters. Then peeling. By year two, they look like a bad manicure.
I’ve seen this go wrong: a luxury car dealership in Phoenix put up 30-inch
electroplated metal letters on a south-facing wall. Full Arizona sun. The sun doesn’t care about your warranty. In eight months the chrome turned milky. It started flaking at the returns. They paid a fortune to tear the whole set down and put up PVD-coated stainless. Those letters are still up, eight years now. Zero color shift.
PVD coating doesn’t oxidize. It’s inert. It handles salt spray, acid rain, UV, even the boneheaded pressure-washer guy who thinks “more PSI” is a solution.
