You’ve got a pile of old channel letters in the back lot. Rusted stainless frames. Cracked acrylic faces. A tangle of LED modules and drivers that might still work. Your first instinct? Toss them in a dumpster. Bad move.
Here’s the reality: A single 4-foot front-lit channel letter contains roughly 2-3 kg of aluminum or stainless steel, 1-2 kg of acrylic sheet, and 0.5 kg of electronic components including LED modules and a power supply. If you’re dumping that, you’re throwing away $15-$30 in scrap value per letter — and potentially violating e-waste laws in 19 states.
I’ve spent 15 years in this industry. I’ve watched shops lose money on disposal fees while recyclers got rich off their scrap. The thing is, most sign contractors treat every sign as “end-of-life” waste. But the real money — and the real compliance risk — is in treating them as “end-of-use” assets. Let me show you how.
Landfill disposal isn’t just environmentally stupid. It’s financially stupid too. Consider this: A typical 10-letter storefront sign with aluminum returns, acrylic faces, and LED modules costs you about $50-$80 in dumpster fees if you haul it yourself. But if you separate the materials, you can recover $100-$200 in scrap metal, reusable LED modules, and clean acrylic regrind.
That’s a swing of $150-$280 per sign — money you’re leaving on the table every time you toss a sign in the trash.
But the bigger risk is legal. California’s SB 20 and New York’s E-Waste Act classify LED drivers, power supplies, and programmable controllers as covered electronic devices. Dump them in a landfill and you’re looking at fines of $5,000-$25,000 per violation. And if your client is a Fortune 500 company? They’ll audit your disposal chain. Fail that audit and you lose the contract.
Before you can recycle, you need to know what you’re dealing with. Mixed-material signs are the norm — a single channel letter might have five different material streams. Here’s how to sort them fast:
One trick I learned the hard way: Always check for mercury in older neon signs. If you see glass tubes, assume they contain mercury vapor. That’s hazardous waste — you cannot put it in a dumpster. Period.
Disassembly is where most shops screw up. They grab a crowbar and start prying, cracking acrylic, bending metal frames, and shorting out LED modules. Here’s the right way to do it:
Step 1: Remove the power supply first. Disconnect AC input. Cut wires at the connector, not the PCB. Label the voltage and wattage with a Sharpie. A 12V 100W Mean Well driver sells for $25-$40 used. Don’t destroy it.
Step 2: Extract LED modules. Most are glued with double-sided tape or silicone. Use a heat gun at 150°F (65°C) for 30 seconds to soften the adhesive. Pry gently with a plastic spudger. Test each module with a 12V battery — functional SMD 2835 modules fetch $0.50-$1.00 each on the used market.
Step 3: Remove the acrylic face. Channel letter faces are usually held with screws or snap-fit clips. Remove fasteners first. If it’s glued, use a utility knife to cut the silicone bead. Do NOT pry — acrylic cracks easily. A 3mm thick 2’x4’ sheet of clean acrylic regrind is worth $5-$10.
Step 4: Separate the metal frame. Aluminum returns are typically welded or riveted. Cut rivets with a drill (3/16” bit). TIG welds are tough — you may need an angle grinder. Sort aluminum from stainless steel. Scrap aluminum: $0.50-$0.80/lb. Stainless 304: $0.30-$0.50/lb. A 5-foot channel letter frame yields 8-12 lbs of aluminum — that’s $4-$10 per letter.
Step 5: Handle PCBs and electronic waste. LED boards contain lead solder and trace amounts of antimony, beryllium, and brominated flame retardants. These are hazardous. Bag them separately and send to an R2-certified e-waste recycler. Cost: $0.50-$1.50 per pound for processing. But the copper in the PCB traces and the gold in the LED pads have recovery value — up to $0.20/lb.
Here’s the insight most shops miss: The highest return comes from harvesting functional components, not recycling raw materials. A used Samsung 5630 LED module (still working) sells for $0.75-$1.25 on eBay. A scrap aluminum letter frame? Maybe $0.60/lb. The math is brutal:

The takeaway? Test everything before you scrap it. A 10-minute bench test with a multimeter and a 12V power supply can turn $5 worth of e-waste into $75 worth of resalable components.
Not all recyclers are created equal. If you’re sending mixed-material signs to a scrap yard, you’ll get paid for the metal — but they’ll charge you for disposing the acrylic and electronics. You need a recycler who takes the whole sign and does the separation themselves.
Here are the questions I ask every vendor:
E-waste laws vary wildly by state. In California, SB 20 covers “covered electronic devices” — which includes any device with a circuit board larger than 4 inches. That’s most LED drivers and controllers. You cannot put them in the trash. Period.
New York’s E-waste Act goes further: it bans disposal of “electronic waste” in any solid waste facility. The definition includes “any device that contains a circuit board.” That means even a simple LED channel letter with a rectifier is illegal to landfill in New York.
Other states with strict laws: Connecticut, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New Jersey, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, Wisconsin. Combined, these states cover 45% of the U.S. population.
And here’s the kicker: If you’re in a state without specific e-waste laws, the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) still applies. LED boards with lead solder are “characteristic hazardous waste” if they leach more than 5 mg/L of lead. That’s most of them. Landfilling them is a federal violation.
Not every old sign needs to be recycled. If the sign is structurally sound and the LEDs still work, consider donating it to a school, museum, or non-profit theater. Under IRS Section 170, you can deduct the fair market value of the sign — which is typically 50-70% of its original cost.
I’ve seen shops donate 20-letter channel letter sets to local community theaters. The theater gets a $2,000 sign for free. The shop gets a $1,500 tax deduction and avoids $200 in disposal fees. And the sign stays out of the landfill for another 5-8 years. Win-win-win.
Just make sure you get a written acknowledgment from the recipient. The IRS requires it for any deduction over $250.

Sorting: Use a magnet. Aluminum is non-magnetic; stainless 304 may be slightly magnetic. Separate by alloy if possible (scrap yards pay more for clean, sorted loads). Recycling method: Clean frames can go directly to a scrap metal yard. Remove all screws, rivets, and attached plastic or rubber. Baling or compacting saves space. Sorting: Cast acrylic (clear, UV-stabilized) is most valuable. Polycarbonate yellows faster and is less desirable. Separate by color and thickness. Recycling method: Clean, uncontaminated acrylic can be reground and remolded. Many plastic recyclers accept it, but call first. Acrylic regrind value: $0.10-$0.25/lb. Avoid mixing with polycarbonate — it ruins the melt.
Sorting: Test each module with a 12V battery. Sort into working (resellable) and non-working (e-waste). Power supplies: test with multimeter, label voltage/wattage. Recycling method: Working components sell on eBay or to refurbishers. Non-working units go to an R2-certified e-waste recycler. Never send working LEDs to scrap — you lose 50x the value.
Sorting: Bag separately from metal and plastic. Include all circuit boards, drivers, controllers. Recycling method: R2-certified recyclers recover copper, gold, and silver from PCBs. Some pay for high-grade boards (server/telecom), but LED boards are low-grade. Expect to pay $0.50-$1.50/lb for processing unless you have volume.
Sorting: Strip insulation from copper wire for highest value. Separate by gauge (18-22 AWG common). Recycling method: Clean copper wire: $0.80-$1.20/lb. Insulated wire: $0.40-$0.60/lb. Use a wire stripper for efficiency.
