You Want Lasting? Start with Acrylic—But Know the Grade

I've installed this in more strip malls and retail centers than I can count. The first thing a customer asks is always, "How long before it looks like crap?" And nine times out of ten, the answer comes down to one thing: acrylic quality.

Domestic acrylic—the cheap stuff from an unknown Chinese supplier—has a 90-92% light transmittance when new. Looks great. But give it 12-18 months outdoors and it's yellowing like a bad set of teeth. The UV stabilizers in that grade are barely there. I've watched a $10,000 channel letter set turn into a sad, discolored mess before the first lease renewal.

Here's what the permit office won't tell you: Mitsubishi and Degussa acrylic (the real deal) hold their clarity for 5-8 years outdoors. That's not a marketing claim—that's me replacing a letter after eight years and the old one matching the new one within 5% color shift. You pay a premium, but for any sign that faces direct sun, it's the difference between looking professional and looking like you're running a pawn shop.

Pro tip: if the letter face is over 2.5 meters tall, do not use 2mm acrylic. It'll flex, crack, and sag. Go with 5mm minimum. I've seen whole signs buckle because some designer thought "thin and modern" meant "structurally sound." It doesn't.

If the steel is low-grade and the coating chips—and it will, if the installer hits it with a screwdriver—rust starts from the scratch. Go with 304 or 316 from the start. Your warranty won't cover rust if you started with substandard material.

Aluminum: The Lightweight That Holds Its Own—But Has Limits

I've installed this in places where the wall was a joke—thin plywood over studs, not even proper blocking. Aluminum saved my bacon. It weighs about one-third of steel, which means you can mount it with fewer anchors and less worry about structural load. For light boxes, backlit panels, and flat cut-out letters, aluminum is my default.

Common gauges: 0.040" to 0.063" (1.0mm to 1.6mm). Outdoor life is 8-12 years depending on finish—anodized lasts longer than powder coated if the coating is high quality. Aluminum is naturally rust-proof, which is a huge advantage over steel in wet climates. I've seen anodized aluminum signs survive 10 years in Seattle rain with zero corrosion.

Here's the brutal truth: aluminum bends easier than steel. I've watched a windstorm take a thin aluminum sign and fold it like a cheap accordion. Anything taller than 4 feet in an exposed location needs a steel frame or at least 1.6mm aluminum with internal bracing. Do not trust the "lightweight" marketing for big outdoor signs unless you've done the math on local wind loads.

Pro tip: for interior signs, aluminum is perfect. It's easy to cut, bends well, and takes paint beautifully. But if your sign is over 3 meters wide, consider using a steel substructure. The metal just can't hold that span without reinforcement.

LED Modules: The Difference Between 18 Months and 5 Years

Most Chinese factories don't have it—they'll have CE marking instead. CE costs 20,000-50,000 RMB and takes 2-8 weeks. But CE is not accepted in the US. Ask to see the certificate with today's date.
