Acrylic is where I see the first mistake. Cheap domestic acrylic starts yellowing in 1 to 2 years. Mitsubishi or Degussa UV-resistant acrylic holds for 5 to 8 years. The price difference is about 15-20% on the sheet. The cost difference in labor to replace a yellowed face is brutal.
For a one-off small sign, domestic acrylic is fine. For a franchise or a long-term tenant, you're an idiot to save that money. And if the face is over 2.5 meters, you need 5mm, not 3mm. I don't care how good your LED layout is — thin acrylic warps, the modules show through, and the sign looks like a cheap TV from 2002.
Stainless steel comes in two grades that matter: 304 and 316. 304 has 18% chromium and 8% nickel. It lasts 10+ years outdoors. 316 adds 2-3% molybdenum for marine and industrial environments, pushing lifespan past 15 years — for a 20-30% higher material cost.
I've seen this go wrong: a developer ordered 304 for a beachfront condo project in Florida. Three years of salt air turned those letters into rusty shadows of themselves. The 316 upgrade would've cost pennies per letter compared to the reorder and reinstallation.
Look, for a strip mall in Ohio, 304 is fine. For Miami Beach, pay for 316. And if your client wants metal letters without illumination, our stainless steel letters come in brushed #4, mirror #8, PVD, or powder coated — with 10+ years of outdoor life if you don't cheap out on the grade.
Aluminum is the other workhorse. It weighs one-third of steel, doesn't rust, and carries a natural oxide layer that protects it. Anodized or powder coated, it lasts 8-12 years outdoors. You can buy an LED module for 30 cents. It'll work great for 12 to 18 months — then start flickering and dying one by one, like old Christmas lights.
Quality modules using Samsung or Osram chips cost four to five times more. They deliver 5+ years of real life. Every experienced sign shop has done this math: the labor to climb back up a ladder and swap modules costs more than the premium for good LEDs ever did.
The industry standard module is SMD 2835, pushing 100-150 lumens per watt. Need maximum brightness for double-faced signs? That's SMD 5730 at 40-60 lumens per chip. RGB color work? SMD 5050.
Here's what nobody tells you about LED ratings: L70 means the chip is considered "dead" when output drops to 70% of original. A 50,000-hour L70 rating is about 5.7 years of continuous operation. That's the actual spec, not "works forever." Anyone promising 8 years of full brightness is lying.
We put a 2-year warranty on LEDs and 1 year on power supplies. If a factory offers you a 5-year warranty with a straight face, ask them to commit the replacement cost in writing. The silence tells you everything.
Color temperature also matters more than buyers think. 3000-3500K warm white for restaurants and hospitality. 4000-5000K neutral for retail and corporate. 6000-6500K cool for industrial and highway signs. Get it wrong and a steakhouse looks like an operating room.
Let's put numbers on the table. Factory-direct pricing, per letter: front-lit channel letters run $20-80. Back-lit halo letters run $35-120. Non-lit stainless runs $15-40. 3D fabricated letters run $40-120. Plain aluminum runs $10-25.

Now compare that to US retail installed pricing: $200-700 per letter for front-lit, $400-1,000 for halo. That's not us ripping anyone off — that's the cost of American labor, rent, and insurance. But it means a factory-direct order saves you 50-65% on the product itself. That margin is the entire reason importers exist.

Every buyer asks about CE. Some ask about UL. Almost nobody asks to see a date on the certificate.
CE marking costs 20,000 to 50,000 RMB and takes 2-8 weeks. Most factories claim they have it. Ask them to send the certificate PDF and check the issue date and scope. Half of them go quiet.
UL 48 is the certification that actually matters for US electrical work. It costs $4,000 to $15,000 and takes 4-9 months, with quarterly factory audits. That's why so few Chinese factories hold genuine UL. ETL is a legitimate alternative, typically 10-30% cheaper and faster.
Here's what nobody tells you: UL covers the electrical components and listing — not the wind load on your acrylic face, not the fire resistance of your cabinet. You still need NEC Article 600 compliance on the install side. That's between you and your electrician, not us.
Outdoor signs need IP65 at minimum — dust-tight and resistant to water jets from any direction. Coastal clients should spec IP66. IP68 is for submersible applications, which 99% of signs don't need despite what the marketing team says.
And if you sell to US clients, remember ADA: tactile signs need Grade 2 Braille, non-glare surfaces, and mounting 48-60 inches off the floor. It adds time and cost. Warn your client early, not after approval.
The US Section 301 tariffs add roughly 30% to Chinese imports right now. Some factories hide this until the invoice. We quote it up front, because the tariff isn't the factory's fault and it isn't your fault — it's just math.
