The two finishes live and die by the metal under them and the prep work before them. Anodizing is an oxide layer grown into the aluminum. Powder coat is paint, baked on. One is part of the metal. The other sits on top.
The ugly truth is most sign shops order the finish first and the metal second. That's backwards. A $12 aluminum letter with a fancy powder coat is still a $12 letter. The finish won't save it.
I've seen this go wrong: a contractor in Tampa bought 1.0mm aluminum letters with powder coat for a beachfront bar. Two years later the paint bubbled at the edges and weld points. Salt air got underneath. He blamed the powder. The real problem was thin metal and lazy edge prep.
