I've seen sign shop owners lose $10,000 deposits on signs that never shipped, and I've seen importers celebrate a "great deal" that turned into rusted letters six months later.
This isn't a marketing piece. I'm going to tell you what to look for before you wire a cent overseas, and then I'll tell you what we can and can't do at Aochuang. Because if you're smart enough to read this, you're smart enough to know that nobody's perfect.

Price That Makes You Feel Like a Genius? That's the First Red Flag
Look, you're not smarter than every other sign shop on the planet. If a factory quotes you $15 per front-lit stainless steel channel letter while everyone else is at $35, they're either cutting the stainless to 0.8mm instead of 1.2mm, using domestic acrylic that yellows in a year, or they're going to hit you with a "packing fee" that doubles the invoice.
I've seen this go wrong: a contractor in Texas paid for 200 LED modules at $1.20 each. Cheapest quote he found. When the signs arrived, half the modules flickered within three weeks. He tried to contact the factory. They"d changed their WhatsApp number. The $1.20 modules weren't even LED — they were resistive glow wire painted to look like SMD.
The math is simple. A quality SMD 2835 module from a real supplier costs $0.30–0.50 just in components. If the finished module in a sign is priced at $1.20, that's not a deal — that's a fraud.
Certificates That Wouldn't Survive a Paperweight
The ugly truth is that 80% of the "CE certificates" floating around Chinese factories are PDFs someone made in PowerPoint. Real CE marking costs 20,000–50,000 RMB and requires testing. That's $3,000–7,000. Most small factories don't pay that. They just print the logo.
Ask to see the certificate. Then ask to see it with today's date on it. Call the certifying body. If the factory won't give you a direct phone number, you've found your red flag.
UL is even worse. A real UL 48 for signs costs $4,000–15,000 and takes 4–9 months. If a factory claims to be UL certified and you've never heard of them, they're lying. If they say "we can do UL for you in a week," they're lying. And here's where I'll be honest about us: we're not UL certified. We do CE, RoHS, ISO 9001. For the US market, most of our clients use ETL — it's a UL alternative that costs 10–30% less and still passes inspection. So don't ask me for a UL sticker you'll never get. Ask me for the ETL path or work with a lab we already have.
"Unlimited Revisions" Is a Fairy Tale
Here's what nobody tells you: every revision costs money on the other side. When a client says "just move the logo 2mm left," the factory has to re-cut the CNC path, sometimes re-bend the acrylic, and that eats a day. If a factory promises "unlimited revisions," they've simply baked in the cost — and you'll pay for it either in the quote or in the "surprise adjustments" later.
I once had a customer from Australia send 23 revisions on a single letter shape. Twenty-three. The design wasn't even that complicated. We did it because we charge per revision on contracts above a certain size. But you know what happens with a factory that doesn't charge? They do the first two revisions, then ghost you for a week. That's the real cost of "free."
Make the drawing right the first time. Get a PDF proof, a 3D rendering if needed, and a physical sample if you're ordering more than 50 letters. A proper pre-production sample takes 3–5 days and costs $50–150. Worth it.
The MOQ Game
"Minimum order quantity 50 units" is fine if you're ordering 60. But if you're a sign shop needing 12 letters for a storefront, and every factory you call laughs at you, you're dealing with mass-production racketeers.
We set MOQ at 1 piece because we can. Our laser cutter, CNC router, and welding benches are set up for small batch work. But I'll be honest — a one-letter order costs us more in setup time per unit than a 100-letter order. We charge per letter fairly ($20–80 for front-lit, $35–120 for halo-lit), and at one unit you'll be at the top of that range. That's not a rip-off. That's arithmetic.
The red flag is the factory that says "no MOQ" but then says "we'll ship by air freight at $8/kg for a single letter." Air freight from China to the US for 10kg costs $40–120. If they quote you $80 for a single small letter, they're hiding something.
Shipping Quote: What You Don't See Will Hurt You
Any factory can quote "free shipping" or "$30 shipping" on a sign. Then customs brokers call you about the $150 "port handling fee" and the "bond fee" and the "container imbalance charge."
Here's what I do: I give you the freight cost at the factory door — that's the honest number for us. Then I walk you through the rest. Sea freight for one cubic meter runs $80–200 LCL, a full container $1,200–3,000. Air freight is $4–12/kg and takes 10–20 days. Express is $30–100 for small packages. US Section 301 tariffs add about 30% on most signs. That's not my nickel, that's Uncle Sam.
If a factory quotes you a price that includes door-to-door shipping without breaking down tariffs, they're either eating the cost (impossible) or they're going to hit you with a surprise at the border. I've seen this go wrong more times than I can count — a shop owner in Florida got a $900 customs bill on a $1,200 sign. Trust me, the factory knew that was coming.
Warranty Without a Phone Number Is Junk
The ugly truth about Chinese factory warranties: they're as full of holes as a cheap aluminum pan. "2-year LED warranty" means nothing if the factory changes its WhatsApp number in month three.
We warrant LEDs for 2 years and power supplies for 1 year. That's written, signed, and we've honored it. But don't get greedy. I had a client ask for a 5-year warranty on a $80 sign. That sign has a power supply that costs $12 to replace. You think I'm going to ship five years of replacements for free? No. I'll sell you a higher-grade power supply at cost, but the warranty reflects the actual product.
The red flag is a factory that offers a "lifetime warranty." Nobody offers a lifetime warranty on LED modules that have an L70 lifespan of 50,000 hours. That's about 5.7 years if you run them 24 hours a day. And that's for good modules — Samsung, Osram, Blueview. If you're getting cheap modules with a "5-year warranty," you're probably getting a number printed on a sticker, not real support.
The "Samsung LED" Lie
Here's what nobody tells you: some factories buy fake Samsung modules from Taobao for $0.10 and put them in signs. You know how you tell? Pull the module off the board and look at the pad surface. Genuine Samsung modules have a specific phosphor color and a laser-etched code. Fakes have gray plastic and blurry printing.
We use genuine Samsung and Osram modules for our
back-lit halo letters and
front-lit channel letters when clients ask. But for the standard lineup, we use good quality SMD 2835 modules at 100–150 lm/W. They're not Samsung. They're manufactured by a China domestic brand, but they're built with L70 ≥50,000 hours and we test every batch on the aging rack for 8–12 hours before shipping.
If a factory tells you "all Samsung" without specifying the exact model number, ask for the data sheet and the batch number. If they can't produce it, they're bluffing.
What Our Factory Can Actually Do (Honest)
Let's get this straight. We're not the biggest factory. We're 50 people in a 3,000m² facility in Lu'an, Anhui. Founded 2010. We've shipped to dozens of countries. We can do a
stainless steel letter in 304 for a strip mall in Ohio, and we'll tell you to upgrade to 316 if you're on Miami Beach — that's a 20–30% premium for 2% more molybdenum, and worth every penny in salt air.
We can make
acrylic light boxes,
neon flex signs,
rimless channel letters, and most custom signage you can draw. We can't make a 3-meter-tall monument with welded steel and 200kgs in 5 days. Our lead time is 7–15 days, and that's after we've confirmed the design. If you need it in 3 days, you're talking to the wrong factory.
We don't do free revisions after the third. We don't do rush orders for no money. We don't ship by sea if you need it in 2 weeks — those are your logistics decisions.
But what we do do:
- MOQ of 1 piece — order one letter or a hundred
- 2-year LED warranty, 1-year power supply warranty — in writing
- 100% QC inspection on every unit before boxing
- Export packaging with foam, carton, and plywood crate — no half-assed bubble wrap
- CE, RoHS, ISO 9001 certificates you can verify
- Advice that saves you money, even if it means a smaller order for us
The Bottom Line: Trust Is Built on Specifics
Look, I've had clients say, "How do I know you're not a scam?" I tell them to ask me for the name of my local chamber of commerce, my business license, and my shipping agent's phone number. Then I tell them to call me at a specific hour. I answer.
If a factory can't give you a street address, a landline phone number, and a real person's name — not "Sales Manager Jessica" — hang up.
The red flag checklist before you order:
- Price 40% below everyone else
- Certified by "ISO" but no report number
- Warranty that's longer than the lifespan of cheap LEDs
- Free revisions beyond what's possible
- Shipping quote that leaves out tariffs
- No physical factory photos or video call
I've seen this industry turn into a playground for middlemen who slap their logo on someone else's work and mark up 300%. That's why we sell directly to shops and contractors. Savings are real — typically 50–65% less than US retail for
dual-lit channel letters and other premium builds. But those savings only exist if you skip the middleman — and that also means you have to do the due diligence I've laid out.
